CRW birthday party

Well, The Charles River Wheelman are now at 40. The club is growing strong. I ride every Sunday in Andy’s ride. Everyone had a blast at the musuem. We got a tour of the restored bicycle fleet and had a great cookout. The watermelon was a great way to end a hot day!

I usually take liberty of shooting anything that interests me. You are probably aware of this already if you are a regular reviewer of my website. I find it very interesting to check out the different bicycles that people use in their daily commutes. I had to take a picture of these two lovers. Jake & Emily ride every day on their fixed-gear bicycles; they have geared bicycles for special occassions. They are masters of high cadence and the suffering. These two can ride long distances and longer distances. They have no problem taking their fixed gears over two hundred miles in a day. I find it fascinating and I wish them well. I like taking photography of cycling life and these two look mad about each other and cycling.

I also took a few pictures of the grand procession of members up the hill for the group photograph. Except the group photographer was shooting pictures with a videocamera. So how does that work for a group photo? I snapped a couple off. However, I was unable to get the perfect still picture as everyone was very animated for the camera. However, variety is the spice of life. I think a picture has more flair if they are looking natural and they fail to observe the camera.

The Charles River Wheelmen is a great cycling club to belong. Check out the website at www.crw.org. July is almost over and I have to submit my mileage for publication in the member’s newsletter. July has been great and we haven’t had any serious incidents on the road. I hope that everyone had a great time as I certainly did.

Click on any of the photos to be taken to the photo gallery. You can also enable a slide show option to roll through all of the photos that I took during the day.

Latest adventures of the K1USN Crew

The K1USN club is hard at work in putting together our new headquarters at the Watson Library, which is part of the Braintree Historical Society. We fondly remember our times at the United States Shipbuilding Museum also known to the locals as the Quincy MiniGolf. We believe that we will realize new synergies with our combination of skills and the BHS in order to create the best fish derby in town. Every person in town will whiddle away the hours at our fish derby; I don’t know if they will have time to get a round in. In the picture above, K1RV, K1WN, and Paul are inspecting the engineering work that has been previously been completed by K1WN and K1GUG.

In this picture K1LWI and K1RV who click very well together are reviewing some of the new dx software that K1USN has on its computers. A lot of talk has been going on about the new dx entities. There have been so many in such a short few weeks. These two are part of high speed contingent. They will listen to the sonar in order to scout the locations of the fish in the stream.

Finally, here is a picture of some of the crew inside K1USN’s new headquarters.  Included in this shot is K1GUG, K1WN, and K1RV.

The one on the left is the lead fish wrangler, the one in the middle is the second in charge fish wrangler, and they have not assigned a task to the one on the right.

Latest happenings at N1EY

Well,

I am recovering from the accident. Do not shop for any bicycles, apparel, or any perhiperials at the Bicycle Link in Weymouth. I purchased a brand new bike there approximately four months ago. The mechanics failed to setup the bike properly at the time of purchase. I returned the bike shortly after purchase to correct the problems; they failed to resolve any of the problems.

I took the bike to Dave of Rockland Cycle in Rockland, Mass. Dave will take care of you. You will not wait two weeks for your bicycle to return to you without any necessary repaired incompleted. Yes, after I gave the Bicycle Link a large sum of money they held on to my bike for two weeks and did nothing. I couldn’t ride on MY bike for two weeks, while it sat in their basement without any repairs. Dave reviewed my bicycle and had it fixed within an hour; the apparent root problem was that crankset was never inserted properly. The front derailuer and the rear derailuer were both set up wrong. The Front derailuer was way off.

This latest incident caused me considerable pain. I do not find it satisfactory for a four month old bolt to fail while I’m riding on the bicycle. I suffered a ton of road rash and a hip that still aches from pain. The bolt just snapped in half.

I bandaged myself up and proceeded along for the rest of that week in pain. KB1TOM gave me some advice and better bandages. I rode the Climb to the Clouds Century as a sweeper on the following Sunday. I encountered several riders that had mechanical difficulty. One person had her bike’s shifting adjusted two days prior to the Climb. The front derailuer was not set up properly. It bound from the middle cassette to to the next to lowest cog in the rear. I found this to be totally unacceptable.

Avoid the Bicycle Link! They are unable to perform the easist of repairs. They require enormous amounts of times in their attempts to make a repair and they charge a lot of money for what? A bolt that fails!

I have filed a complaint with the BBB, already.

I hope to be at Boxboro. Be sure to check out the website at

Misadventures in Bicycling

Well,

Some might already know about my bolt failure. The bolt, which held my bicycle’s seat clamp, together, snapped in half. This clamp holds the rails of the seat onto the seat post. Of course, these types of technical issues only happening while riding on your bicycle. I was doing about 20mph and starting to get moving. I was thinking intervals. Next thing, I am losing my balance. I slid on my left slide down the road for at least twenty feet. I almost slid completely pass one house lot while on the road’s tough surface. They(medical profession) call road rash burns. Well, I got some nice road rash.

To make things worse I still did the CRW’s Climb to the Clouds century on Sunday. My fall was on Thursday. I got my bike adjusted at the Bike Barn with a new bolt. Things were totally off. My position was not right. The heat got to me. I easily lost 10 pounds while on the ride. I had a little bit of sunstroke, I think. My riding buddy, Andy, was not doing much better than I. The sun was hitting him, too.

The CRW did a great job in running the Climb to the Clouds.  Approximately 800 people attended the ride from the two starting points.

Latest happenings at K1USN

We need to give everyone an update of the progress at the K1USN club. Things are moving along very smoothly. Shown in the picture above are K1RV, W1BT, and W1AY. W1BT is always working on keeping everything clean.

The musuem has an elaborate security system. However, we do have coverage on the main door. Mr. Fahey recently received a great donation.

As you are aware the K1USN club is housed in the new Watson Musuem. Watson was very interested in all sorts of pastimes, industrial, and scientific endeavors. The Musuem has an actual recording of Mr. Watson, which is in the process of being archived. These are several watercolours illustrated by Mr. Watson, which are now on display.

In the clubroom here is a picture of the guys at one of the operating stations. The radio was connected to K1GUG’s dipole, which we strung the other week.
More updates shall be coming in the future. We have a lot of fun at the K1USN club.

Cyclists in Action

This woman must be on her way to work in Longwood. Is she going to work overnight and return in the early hours of the morning on her bike?

This fellow is riding on the sidewalk.  He thinks it is safer, but he races by me with such speed to suggest that he has confidence and the bravado to ride in the street.  It is an ironic thing in a way.

Every once in awhile, I trek in downtown Boston. I use to work downtown every day, but work changes. Here are some photographs of bicyclists in action along Beacon Street near the beginning of the back bay.

I find these pictures to be very interesting in the terms of different bicyclists captured as they pass within seconds or minutes of each other. They all seem to be very different. They are all riding bicycles. Yet, each one seems to have an entirely unique way of perceiving his or her bicycle and how to ride.

Remember never to ride so close to cars on either side of the road.  You do not want to meet a door.

Plus, some of these bicyclists are just so cute. You have to take a picture of them. She has some european style. Perhaps she is an exchange student from Italy.

I have a few more pictures from another outing posted in a previous article.  Plus, there are pictures from one of my CRW rides in the photography gallery in addition to these.
