The final days of the Boeing LRV

My friends, George and Tadd, went on a trip to see the final revenue trip for the Boeing LRV units on the Green Line. These units were created during a downturn in the aviation industry for Boston. MBTA created a dreamlist of items that were totally unpractical and Boeing did not quite any experience in producing something meant to use wheels in part for its main motive effort.

These were the units that I most remember from the Green Line and throughout the last twenty years or so I rode these units. They started a whole new trend in tram car design thought and service delivery. They were built by Boeing’s Helicopter division and they set the way for the MBTA’s recurring problem of having equipment stay on the rails. However, they had style and they were new. They replaced the old PCC that did not have air conditioning. Eventually, the units received some nice doors.

The whine of traction motors is something eerie but fun at the same time. These pictures were taken by my friend, Tadd. Notice the snow that is falling. Boston can get snow after the official start of Spring and these shots were only taken a few days before Spring was supposed to start.

NEAR-Fest

A good DX’er just emailed me that NEAR-Fest shall be held this May in Deerfield, NH. This will absorb the duties of Hosstraders as the largest ham gathering in New England each year. Their website is at www.near-fest.com. I just might go. It would not be Hosstraders, but why not?

Marching forward!

I have noticed that we have Marched into Spring. Boston has been pullverized with the attack of killer snow. In the wake of the snow remains ice and street flooding in various places which leaves me to wonder if spring will actually manifest itself in a more traditional manner. I made an attempt to meet the breakfast club this morning.

Ken was the first one to arrive. He was worried that he was going to have to spend the whole hour with only me. Soon several others joined us. WB1EVP talked about his 3G card. I talked about my experiences of using a 3G card. I just got one this week! I have to say that it is a handwarmer. It really makes me think that I’m radioactive. I swear that people look funny at me as I walk by with my laptop and their radios set to 103.3FM start acting up. The card really heats up and the RFI is very bad with my two meter rig.

We also used WB1EVP’s new motorola lowsplit 70cm handheld to make contact with England via Echolink.

I came home to watch some TV and stuff. I went out to the library and I got an email from Mike saying that bike ride for tommorrow was cancelled. I can not wait for spring. I want to ride. The club ride from Rockland started in March last year, but I’ve noticed that Andy has put it back to April. I think that it has something to do with the new time. The law is punishing us early birds! It was light and now it dark again when I wake up! I’m going to sleep and it is still lightsome out.

I’m playing around on 2 meters with CW just to see if I actually raise a DX contact. I would not want anyone to actually hear my horrible fist.

Chronicle

I can not believe it! I was actually on WCVB-TV last friday night! Yes, I really was! You can watch the entire segment about broadcast radio at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4569021939106575335. It was a great program about broadcast radio and its roots in Massachusetts. Not much of me made into the final cut of the program but I am in the foreground in two shots. See if you can spot me!

My friend K1GUG used to run Dale Dormand’s board. He told this to me last saturday at breakfast. We have such a blast and learn all sort of neat radio thinks at breakfast. So stop in at the Hearth & Kettle at 7AM on any Saturday. Click on the picture of Dale Dormand to visit Fybush.Com, where you can learn more about local radio history. WuWu was all briefly featured in the segment. Even the Steam & Wireless musuem in Rhode Island gets a few moments.
