Illinois Central Railroad Heritage Association

Hello, Some you might know that I like trains. From the environmental perspective trains use a lot less land and fuel. In the engineering realm they also have accomplished some pretty significant feats. What is there not to like? One of my favorite railroads has always been the Illinois Central Railroad, which is a highly efficient outfit. My friend, Paul, has created a new historical society devoted to the railroad. He is producing a wonderful new magazine about the railroad. Please check it out.

Verticals

WA1NYC put together a portable plastic masting system. We rigged up a 20 meter ground plane to it, but conditions were very poor. I heard some stations and the S meter did not even move! My portable mast works really well for getting my toploaded vertical up 33 feet. It will tune on 40 through 10. I have improved operations by creating a grounding bar to connect the radials.

I worked a G3, ZP8, and a S52 on the loop this weekend. The G3 stated that I was 40 but he was 55 easily. I could hear several of his friends but when it came time to make a report the QSB was tough.

Fort Revere

Hello! I decided to operate from Fort Revere, today. Upon my arrival at Fort Revere, N1QIF and K1LWI were already setting up a twenty meter QRP rig. I set my operation into action as well. I put a twenty meter half square. We had a lot of fun. The most memorable contacts were with the CQ/M contest, GB400AA, and W4J. The most colourful call sign of all the various hams that engaged in conversation with us was W3EED. I did not make that callsign up.

We had a lot of fun. I also worked a couple of nifty stations such as LZ07KM, which celebrates the creation of the Cyrllic alphabet and the precursor to modern Bulgarian. Langauge history interests me.

Trucks of NEARFest

I selected some of the best and most eyecatching installations for this feature. The most dedicated hams always show for these events. These are the individuals that would put the most work into their vehicles. Individuals such as K1HLP, whom is a serious mobiler arrive bright and early for the event! Others also happen to find lucky breaks.

Everyone had lots of fun at NEARFest.Ê NEARFest will be a big event for years to come.Ê Many of these vehicles had more than one antenna.Ê The last picture was fabulous.Ê He had eight separate antennae on his vehicle.Ê He had every ham band above 50Mhz+ covered.

NEARFest

Hello, Welcome back to my webpage! NEARFest was last weekend. Now Mother’s Day approaches. Check out W1QWT’s pictures, here. Everyone had a fun time up at NEARFest. W1AY kept me from buying too many crazy things! I saw the usual suspects at this type of event and some new things. The most unique item at the flea was the rail car that is a human-powered vehicle. The rail interface is just like a traditional railroad wheel except that they are two pieces.Ê The wear area and flange is made out of urethane casting.Ê The other part is an ABS plastic used for bicycle wheels.

NEARFest features several radio stations! I do not know who listens to all three at the same time, but I am sure that someone does so that they do not miss anything!

Here is N1ZZN with the best radio station. He has to be the best. I ride my bike by his place all the time. I do not ride my bike by the other guys! Right?

Here is the third radio stations. I spun the dial and could not believe how many radio stations were emanting from NEARFest on the driveup!

This guy looks like he is serious. I do not think so?

Who was this fellow sending field reports to record with the radio?

A possible winner of the porcupine award.

I did not know that anyone rode these! I was not sure how he appends his callsign. Or does he put the mobile walker identifier before his callsign? Do we follow the european covention or the atypical american convention? Is it MW/callsign or callsign/MW?

Boston

You might notice that I have a rendition of Boston that I made on the computer for the webpage’s header. Here is a shot of Boston that I took from the North Side. It is revolutionary as I hardly ever go past the Neponsent let alone the Charles! I will post an update about my adventures in Deerfield and the return of the festival in the form of NEARFest!
