Part of webmaster's adventure in Railroading
The picture above shoes #470, which is on static display in Waterville, ME. This past weekend, KB1PBT and WA1NYC accompanied me on an adventure downeast to Maine. We started the trip with a stop in Bradford, which is a section of Haverhill, MA. We saw a few MBTA trains and some Guilford light power. We headed over to Haverhill proper. I managed a nice shot of the Downeaster against the background of the maturing cityscape.
Eventually we wound across the New Hampshire border. In Dover,NH we saw the sand and gravel train that the New Hampshire North Coast runs to Boston! I had seen the cars but never got a good picture of the train in operation. Below is a shot of KB1PBT waiting for a Pan An Railways local to head north.
Eventually, we reached Maine. We went to various places such as Waterville, ME. Waterville, ME was fun. W1ZZA told me to keep an eye out for the Silent Woman Restaurant. Unforunately, I think that it had closed. We did stop at a fantastic hot dog stand. Their hot dogs were not cheap, but they were not bad. Even though it was $1.25 for each hot dog, WA1NYC made a motion for a second round.
We visited a nice historical society museum in Pittsfield, ME. They had a collection of a variety of typewriters. One was very interesting as it was an overhead design atypical of the more usual variants. We visited the Seashore Trolley Museum. I was exhausted from the trip! On Monday I had to go to work, which was 60 miles each way after 750+ miles of driving during the weekend. Do you know how you drive back and forth on the chase? I sure did a lot of that stuff on the Maine excursion. We chased several trains. I also think that I got some nice bridge shots during the chases. I would like to get a very nice panomoric shot of the foothills in Maine, but Pan Am Railways runs at the bottom of those hills and in between the peaks. We really flew down those hills to track level. I felt bad for these fellows that had to climb up the hill that we just came down.
